Suet Bird Feeders
Birds generally survive on seeds, fruits, berries, nectar, nuts, shrubs, insects and worms. But aside from that natural food selection, one of the most appetizing foods that attract several bird species is the suet. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice, creepers, chickadees, cardinals, finches, sparrows, and even bluebirds, are several of those drawn to suet feeders with this tasty entrée.
Suet is a raw beef fat or mutton fat around the kidneys and loins. It melts at moderate temperatures and solidifies at room temperature. Its low melting point and high caloric content makes it an ideal food for cold weather explorers. It sustains them with their daily energy requirements while travelling in those climates. It is for that similar reason that suet recipes are made for birds. On colder months, it keeps those feathered creatures warm and nourished.
Suet bird feeders are used to contain bird suet in the form of cakes or balls, and offer energy-rich nutrition to birds. Its typical design is a box shaped wire cage with a plastic coating. It could hold one or two standard suet cakes. But only those birds with the ability to hang upside down can fully use this type of feeder. Hence, an upside-down style is specially made for those clinging birds, and tail props are developed for some species of woodpeckers that need support under their long tails.
Suet feeders are also manufactured to hold suet balls. But more economically, you can fill a mesh onion bag with a bundle of fresh suet and simply hang it outside. The advantage of these feeders is that it attracts birds the most, and with processed bird suet that does not easily melt and turn rancid on moderate and warmer temperatures, you can hang your suet feeders throughout the whole year. But of course, it must be washed and cleaned more frequently, and kept under the shade on a warm weather. It must not be placed within the reach of other animals that help themselves with the contents of bird feeders.
These suet feeders also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It’s very easy to use and it works great in encouraging a lot of birds to your backyard. You do not only take the pleasure of bird watching and sating their tummies, you are serving a highly nutritious food to your feathered guests, and helping them live on from season to season, and from one place to another.
