Prepare your own nectar for humming bird feeder
Congratulations on your brand new, stylishly designed humming bird feeder. You already pictured in your mind where you are going to put it and just how lovely it would look in your garden. But wait, did you know that you can save up more by creating your very own nectar syrup instead of buying it from grocery stores?
Yes, it is very simple to create nectars to fill in any humming bird feeders or oriole bird feeders. Here, we will teach you a tried and tested mix that you can easily follow. In the future, you might be able to concoct your own as your signature nectar juice.
First, you need to prepare your materials and these include your humming bird feeder, measuring cups, wooden spoon, cooking pot and stove. The ingredients that you must have are sugar and distilled water. But before we proceed, let us clarify some points on your primary ingredients.
When choosing sugars for the nectars in your humming bird feeders or any oriole bird feeders for that matter, it is important to remember that you are trying to duplicate the basic characteristics of natural nectars. The nectars that come from flowers are very rich in sucrose or glucose while those that come from juicy fruits are high in fructose content. As such, you will only be fooling around with artificial sweeteners as this does not have any real value as food to the humming birds or orioles.
You are much better off in using refined white sugar for your humming bird feeder. All you need is about a sugar to water ratio of 1:4. In other words, you only need about one part sugar to every four parts of distilled water.
Whenever possible, try not to use tap water as it may contain impurities. Thru distillation or simply boiling, you can kill any minute algae and bacteria in the water. When all of the materials and ingredients are ready, we can begin your nectar preparation.
Using your cleaned humming bird feeder, fill it up with distilled water up to just before the brim. Then, pour this water on your measuring cup and take note the measurements. This way, you will know just how much your feeder can contain in a full level.
Next, divide this measurement into four to know exactly how much sugar you will need. For example, if you find that your feeder can hold about 200 mL of water, divide this value by four and you will have about 50 mL of sugar. Take again a dry measuring cup and measure your sugar to this value.
Mix in together your measured sugar with the distilled water in a cooking pot. Bring it to a slow boil to create an even mixture. Constantly stir the sugar-water mixture to prevent any lumps from forming.
Let your mixture cool well before transferring it to your humming bird feeder. You may store cooked sugar-water mixture in the refrigerator and this may last for about two days without spoiling. Now, you can readily prepare your bird nectar without too much fuss and you can actually see some savings while feeding humming birds and orioles.
