Humming bird feeders are among the distinctively and imaginatively designed bird feeders out in the market today. Any feeder can catch the attention of hummers, but it’s the hummingbird feeder that absolutely caters to these birds’ nectar cravings and clinging abilities. There are two basic styles and a whole range of other models in different sizes for bird enthusiasts to choose from.

Saucer or basin-style hummingbird feeders
This feeder is a simple dish which can be filled with nectar or supplementary sugar water. It has ports above the reservoir wherein the hummingbirds can dip its beaks into the syrup. The major advantage of this feeder type is that it is easy…easy to set up, fill, mount on poles and railings, and clean. It has a small capacity that requires you to fill it on a regular basis.

Inverted hummingbird feeders
These humming bird feeders may appear like a glassful of red liquid. It has a central reservoir hung over feeding ports. It releases nectar from above and keeps the ports filled. It is easier to check the nectar levels on these inverted feeders. Apparently, it doesn’t have to be refilled frequently with its bigger capacity. It is more susceptible to leak, though, and not as easy to clean.
Now, what about those top fill and bottom fill variations of hummingbird feeders? Top fill feeders are actually popular among birders. It has the design and mechanism of a bottle, but does not need to be turned upright resulting to less spillage. There’s also one design that comes with a plunger inside the container which functions as a vacuum seal once its cap is tightened correctly and the nectar will automatically start flowing to the feeding ports. On the other hand, bottom fill feeders are filled with nectar from the bottom of its container through a funnel-like opening.
Humming bird feeders with perches are also ideal. Since majority of a hummer’s activity consists of perching and drinking up from nectar feeders, perches give them an avenue to grip comfortably while they feed and a great place to rest on other than on twigs. More importantly, the common feature of these feeders is its ease of maintenance and disassembly.
Keeping it clean, and its contents fresh, does not take much time and effort, and so bird feeding and bird watching hobbyists can take the pleasure of the hummingbirds’ frequent visits and longer stay. Hummingbird feeders are truly reliable in any style.
